Best email marketing platforms in Australia (2026)

Searching for an email platform in Australia surfaces the same global names — priced in US dollars, hosted offshore, supported from other timezones. Here's how the major options actually compare for Australian businesses in 2026, including where each one genuinely shines.

Disclosure: waveMail is our product, so read our verdicts accordingly. Every price below was checked against public pricing pages and independent reviews in mid-2026. Competitor prices are in USD (that's how they bill); always confirm current pricing before committing.

Mailchimp: the default, at a price

The biggest brand, the biggest ecosystem, and genuinely mature infrastructure. It also offers AUD-denominated pricing via a currency selector, which is more than most US platforms do. The trade-offs for Australians: a free plan cut to 250 contacts in January 2026, automation capped at 4 flow steps on Essentials (so real automation starts on Standard), automatic overage billing when you exceed limits, and billing rules where unsubscribed contacts and cross-audience duplicates count toward your bill. We've written a full waveMail vs Mailchimp comparison.

Pick it if: a specific integration or its template marketplace is decisive for you.

ActiveCampaign: automation power, tier ladder

ActiveCampaign's automation engine is arguably the deepest in the mid-market — predictive sending, attribution, sophisticated branching. The catch is the ladder: there's no free plan, the US$15 Starter tier caps automations at 5 actions each (fine for testing, restrictive for real use), and the features people buy ActiveCampaign for effectively start on Plus at US$49/month for 1,000 contacts — around US$99–145/month by 5,000 contacts, with add-ons (enhanced CRM, custom reporting, SMS) priced separately (ActiveCampaign pricing, 2026).

Pick it if: you're running genuinely complex multi-channel journeys with a sales CRM attached, and the budget matches the ambition.

Campaign Monitor: the ex-Aussie

Founded in Sydney in 2004, Campaign Monitor is the name many Australian marketers grew up with — but it's been US-owned for years and now sits inside the Marigold group. It still has some of the best-looking templates in the business and strong agency/multi-client tooling. The 2025 plan rebrand raised prices: Lite (~US$13) carries send caps and thin automation, Essentials (from ~US$31, unlimited sends) is the realistic tier, and send-time optimisation and phone support sit on Premier at US$159+ (Campaign Monitor pricing, 2026). There's no meaningful free plan.

Pick it if: you're an agency managing many client brands and template governance matters more than automation depth.

waveMail: built for the Australian market

Our pitch is simple and specific: Australian-dollar pricing from A$25/month with clearly published quotas, subscriber data on Sydney servers, Australian-based support, and AI tools included from the Starter plan — AI-generated emails, subject lines and templates without an AI upcharge. Unlimited campaigns, landing pages and surveys on every plan; native abandoned-cart for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento; automation flows, advanced segmentation and behaviour targeting scaling up through the tiers (see the full plan comparison — we publish exactly what each tier includes, because not everything is on every plan and we'd rather you know before you buy).

A few capabilities worth calling out because they're uncommon at these price points: Business Profiles for multi-brand businesses (each profile carries its own logo, sender details and website — up to ten on Enterprise, alongside subaccounts, where Mailchimp requires separate accounts per brand); one-time email top-ups for busy months (from A$10 for 5,000 extra sends) instead of automatic overage billing; a wizard-based AI email generator that outputs native editable builder blocks rather than one locked HTML blob, backed by a custom blocks repository you can save your own designs into; AI subject-line scoring, AI-scored A/B testing and spam-score reports on every plan including Starter; address-level email verification as an add-on on top of domain authentication; and flat-priced done-for-you services (domain authentication from A$49, custom templates from A$99) for businesses without an in-house marketer.

Pick it if: you want predictable AUD pricing, local data residency and support in your timezone, without giving up AI tooling or ecommerce automation.

How to actually choose

  • Price at your list size, not the entry tier. Contact-based pricing means the "from" price is a floor. Model the cost at your list size today and at 2× growth.
  • Check which tier your must-have features live on. On every platform in this list — ours included — some capabilities are tier-gated. Read the comparison matrix, not the headline.
  • Check the billing currency. Some platforms (including Mailchimp) offer AUD pricing; others bill in USD, which means the exchange rate reprices your stack every renewal. Confirm at signup.
  • Ask where the data lives. If your privacy policy or sector cares about offshore disclosure, data residency stops being a nice-to-have — APP 8 makes offshore disclosure your responsibility, not the vendor’s.
  • Count your brands. If you run multiple brands or clients, check whether the platform handles that inside one account (subaccounts, brand profiles) or forces separate accounts with separate bills — the admin overhead compounds.
  • Ask what happens in a busy month. Some platforms auto-bill overages; others let you buy a one-time top-up or choose your own upgrade moment. Know which before your first big launch.
  • Test support before you need it. Send a pre-sales question and see how long the answer takes — and what timezone it comes from.
